Designed by the American top architect, Frank Gehry, the Guggenheim Foundation is planning its most ambitious project on Saadiyat Island. The largest Guggenheim Museum ever is to be constructed on approximately 30,000 m2 by the year 2012 and will exhibit collections from all over the world, as well as works of local artists. Moreover, the spacious area will also house a Centre for Art and Technology, a library, research centre and laboratory for the preservation of art.

In addition to the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, further plans include a Louvre Museum, Maritime Museum and a Sheikh Zayed National Museum. The array of impressive constructions on Saadiyat Island not only includes various theatres, an opera house, concert hall and academy for the performing arts, but also a 62 metre high Performing Arts Centre.

The Guggenheim Museum is due to open its doors in several stages from 2012 and will bring life to the Cultural District. Furthermore, there will be a “Biennial Park” with 19 pavillons, which will be used as venues for artistic and cultural events.
